A large clinical team in Thirsk is looking to recruit a new Practice Nurse for its growing center. With a list size of over 11,000 patients, the surgery is based in a purpose-built building with excellent facilities.
Offering a diverse mix of skills across the team, you’ll be working in an interesting and varied role. The team around you will offer support and a dedicated culture.
As an experienced Practice Nurse, you’ll have skills in Cytology (ideally), Immunisations, other Treatment Room skills, and ideally Chronic Disease Management, though this isn’t essential.
Responsibilities
- Work alongside Health Care Assistants to help develop their skills.
- Support the practice in achieving quality indicators and targets of the GMS contract and any relevant National Service Frameworks.
- Undertake opportunistic screening when clinically required.
- Perform occasional venepuncture and electrocardiography – following appropriate training.
- Undertake wound care/ management/dressing techniques.
- Carry out ear examination and syringing, following appropriate training and assessment.
- Undertake male, female, and family planning assessments, give advice, and refer patients appropriately – following appropriate training.
- Perform cervical screening and promote breast awareness – following appropriate training.
- Administer adult and pediatric injections under an individualized prescription or Patient Group Direction, ensuring safe storage, rotation, and disposal of vaccines and drugs.
- Undertake accredited training in specific chronic disease management as or if required. e.g. diabetes, respiratory, epilepsy, CHD, etc. following appropriate training.
- Contribute to the maintenance of the practice disease registers.
- Provide advice on lifestyle issues, assist and support patients in changing their unhealthy behaviors and refer them appropriately.
- Provide an adult and childhood immunization service working to Patient Group Directions – following appropriate training if required.
- Delivers travel health care, including vaccinations and advice for patients – following appropriate training if required.
- Recognize the signs of child abuse, family violence, vulnerable adults, substance abuse, addictive behaviors, and suicidal tendencies and also is aware of local, referral procedures.
- Ensure that current evidence-based approaches to a patient are standard practice
- Apply infection control measures when collecting and handling laboratory specimens, disposing of waste materials, dealing with blood and body fluids spillages, and reporting and treating sharps injuries.
- Undertake first aid and management of emergencies, eg burns, hemorrhage, hypo/hyperglycemic emergencies/asthma attacks.
- Undertake annual training and demonstrates competency in anaphylaxis and also resuscitation techniques
Qualifications
- RGN
- Evidence of recent Study (PREP)
- Recognized Minor Illness. Injuries Certificate or willingness to undertake
- Recognized Nurse Prescribing Qualification
Qualifications
- Knowledge or experience in Chronic Disease Management
- The care of patients presenting with undifferentiated health problems
- Child and adult immunizations
- Cervical Cytology (Not essential)
- Asthma and COPD monitoring (Desirable)
- Family planning
- Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Up-to-date knowledge of QOF and Enhanced Services
- Be fully up to date in terms of clinical updates, immunizations, and vaccinations

Experience
- One must be a Registered Nurse(RN)
- NP-focused graduate master’s or Doctoral Nursing Program
