The primary focus of the role is to work autonomously providing high-quality and timely patient-centred care. We would like to meet ambitious and enthusiastic Emergency  Nurse Practitioners who will• be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, referral and discharge of a diverse range of patients with minor injuries/minor illnesses.

Emergency Nurse Practitioner Job Description:

The content of this job description is designed to be inclusive of a broad range of tasks which may be performed by an emergency nurse practitioner. An emergency nurse practitioner role will responsible for the assessment of care needs, the development, implementation and evaluation of programmes of care, without supervision and will be required to teach other nursing and non-nursing staff. The position encompasses a specialist clinical role of Emergency Nurse Practitioner. It is essential that an ENP will be  NMC registered Nurse with formal ENP qualification.

This post is written to be an equivalent for Agenda for Change (AFC) Band 8. Duties will vary from practice to practice and this is a guide only. Practice accountability structures will also vary.

Emergency Nurse Practitioner Scope Of Practice

Co-ordinates the provision of seamless care for patients from admission to discharge by utilising efficient verbal and written communication practices with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team / Primary Care Services and Carers.

Provides senior cover for, and is responsible for the ongoing management of the ward/ department area in the absence of the senior nurse.

Clinical Practice

  • Assesses, plans, implements and evaluates programmes of care with reference to patients, without direct supervision. Diagnose and manage patients presenting with both acute and chronic conditions based on a management plan which includes a medication plan and other interventions.
  • Demonstrate competency in professional skills relating to ENP practice and expand those skills to meet the needs of the patients. The post holder will be responsible for the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and discharge of specific groups of patients according to ENP policy, utilising a range of investigatory procedures without reference to a doctor.
  • Assist the ward/department manager to facilitate change processes within the area whether clinical or managerial in nature to ensure that the ward/department team foster innovative practice and meet patient needs.
  • In the absence of the ward/department manager, the post holder will supervise, deploy and develop all staff to ensure efficient management of a rapidly changing and developing nursing service.
  • Co-ordinates the provision of seamless care for patients from admission to discharge by utilising efficient verbal and written communication practices with all members of the Multi-Disciplinary Team / Primary Care Services and Carers.
  • Ensure that all written documentation within the ward/department area is clear, concise, timely and complies with the NMC Standards for Records and Record Keeping.
  • Establish, maintain and develop effective communication with all disciplines, patients and relatives.

Managerial  Responsibilities Of Emergency Nurse Practitioner

  • Provides senior cover for, and is responsible for the ongoing management of the ward/ department area in the absence of the senior nurse.
  • In conjunction with and/or in the absence of the ward/department manager, participate in efficient and effective HR planning – management of employee conduct, duty rosters, annual leave, study leave, mandatory training sessions, sickness absence reporting and management of the appropriate use of Bank and Agency nursing complying with agreed policy and procedure.
  • Assist the ward/department manager in the recruitment and selection of staff as required.
  • Ensures effective management of ward/department resources including stores, supplies and medicines.
  • Participate in ward/department, ENP and directorate audit activity where appropriate and assist the ward/department manager in the development of evidence-based practice as required.
  • Reports all accidents/incidents/complaints involving patients, carers and staff to the senior nurse and commence enquiries or documentation as necessary.

Emergency Nurse Practitioner Education

  • Assists the senior nurse in the development of ward/department based orientation and education programmes for newly qualified staff and student nurses and acts as mentor/preceptor as required.
  • Provides teaching, guidance, supervision and support for junior staff (qualified and non-qualified) acting as a resource, advisor and role model to colleagues in the delivery of care.
  • Help foster and maintain an environment which encourages staff development, supporting and counselling staff as necessary.
  • To maintain an extensive knowledge of A&E and ENP nursing practice by participating in on-going education and continuing self-development, including regular appraisal of own performance.

Risk Management/Health And Safety

  • Actively promote the safety of patients, visitors and staff at all times and ensure that systems are in place to identify clinical risk and report incidents to the Directorate Nurse
  • Lead, complying with all Organisational, Health and Safety and Infection Control policies.
  • Participate in the identification of risk and risk management strategies incorporating these, through nurse management, to the risk register and ensure that all risks to patients and staff are identified through the use of the Clinical Incident Reporting System
  • To keep abreast of and inform junior staff of changes in Health and Safety Legislation and policies with particular regard to COSHH, Fire, RIDDOR, Infection Control and Manual Handling


  • Advise patients of the emergency department nurse role, its extent and limits.
  • Communicate effectively, promptly and appropriately with patients and team members.
  • Provide links to additional information/guidance/support for both colleagues and patients/carers including onward referral where required.
  • Modify method of communication with patients to suit the situation, recognise problems/barriers take action and seek help at an early stage when they arise.
  • Communicate risk to patients and ensure proper consent gained where appropriate.
  • Act as an advocate for patients or colleagues who need assistance and representation.
  • Establish and maintain effective communication with internal and external stakeholders/organisations/individuals.
  • Contribute to practice and nursing team meetings.

In the course of their duties, the emergency department nurse role will have access to confidential information relating to patients, their carers and relatives and colleagues within and outside the practice.
